4. Active Design - Case study The National Forest: connectivity through walking and cycling

Type of project: Case study Organization: The National Forest in partnership with Public Health England http://www.nationalforest.org/about_us/

Description

Over 25 years more than 8.5 million trees have been planted in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire, creating an integrated green infrastructure network of recreational paths in harmony with nature. The National Forest extends over 200 square miles and the network provides local communities with easy access to recreational opportunities on their doorstep. It also illustrates a number of Active Design principles. The National Forest is an excellent example of how working with projects in forest areas can help to create a network of walking and cycling routes for both local residents and visitors.
